Press Release - Honoured by city
The St. Laurent Spartans Amateur Football Association is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2004. It makes the club one of the oldest football football association in the city and the province.
The Spartans have won their share of trophies and awards and have proudly sent some of its graduates to the CFL and the NFL. But for its Golden Anniversary, the club has been honoured by one of its greatest accolades yet, and was granted the Order of the Great Laurentians (Order des Grands Laurentiens).
Such prize is given annually by the St. Laurent borough council in recognition for outstanding achievements in the development of the community. St. Laurent football is the only organization to be recipient in 2004. The formal ceremony took place at the borough Hall and was presided by borough mayor Alan DeSousa.
Amongst its most notable alumni, St. Laurent counts BRIAN FORDE (LB, Washington St. & New Orleans Saints); DENNY CHRONOPOULOS (OL, Purdue & Ottawa/Calgary); SHAWN DANIELS (FB, Bowling Green & Saskatchewan/Ottawa/Toronto/Calgary); KELLY WILTSHIRE (LB, James Madison University & Toronto/Ottawa). The club also had the honour to have amongst its rank Montreal boxing greats OTIS & HOWARD GRANT, as well as the the late Cpl. AINSWORTH DYER killed on duty in Afghanistan in 2002.
