Proposal for Corporal Ainsworth Dyer Scholarship Fund and Memorial Plaque

ainsworthDyerI had the privilege of coaching Ainsworth Dyer. Never have I met a more polite and courteous kid. He never complained when things didn't work out; he just persevered and tried harder. I can remember he always had a big smile and a bad joke for everyone. Although a bit shy, Ainsworth left an impression on those he met.

Some people get the opportunity to work in a field that they truly love. Ainsworth and the Canadian military found each other. I'm sure that the work ethic and perseverance that Ainsworth learned from his family and honed in with the Saint-Laurent Spartans helped him during difficult times in life and in the military.

While in service to their country and protecting the peace in Afghanistan in April of 2002, Cpl. Ainsworth Dyer of the Princess Patricia Light Infantry 5th Platoon with 3 others in his platoon were killed by “friendly fire”.

His memory and his efforts should not be forgotten. As a past member of the Saint-Laurent Spartans, there is much that we can do to make sure he will not be forgotten.

I propose the following:

A) Cpl. Ainsworth Dyer Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund will provide monies for a deserving midget aged player who is accepted into a CEGEP-level college. This fund could help the student pay for tuition fees and books.

B) Saint-Laurent Spartans Wall of Fame

The Wall of Fame could be located at Parc Saint-Laurent or the Saint-Laurent City Hall. This Wall could be composed of plaques of former players, coaches or volunteers who have distinguished themselves on the football field or in life.

A sub-committee of the Saint-Laurent Football administration could be brought together to administer and maintain these two projects, either jointly or separately.

I respectfully submit these proposals with the confidence that we as the Saint-Laurent Amateur Football Association, with over 50 years of history, will undoubtedly approve. For our past, present and future players, coaches and volunteers, we owe this to ourselves in remembrance.

Respectfully yours,

Frank Gomes
