Midget AAA
The St-Laurent Midget AAA program, who went through a 1-19 spell as recently
as the 2003-2004, performed a resounding turnaround by completing a perfect
10-0 season in 2010. The senior Spartans were rewarded with the regular season
flag, an invite to play in the top division next season and a trip to this
season’s 1st division playoffs. They will play in the first round the top seed
in all of Quebec midget football, the St-Leonard Cougars.
Bantam AAA
The Spartan bantam are navigating in un-charted waters. At least for the current squad and organization, as they have reached the semi-finals in this year’s postseason. The last AAA Provincial title won by a Spartan team was a 1980’s bantam championship won against North Shore. After that moment of
glory, the performance standards have gradually slipped for years, and the Spartans spent many indistinguished season in second and third division... Until recently. By the strength of previous years’ good results, the team was able to finally regain its first division status last season, and this year’s
has graduted to a top half status.
imposed their power 42-7. This represents a first top division playoffs win in over a decade. They will now travel downtown and play the Sun Youth Hornets, a team they lost twice to by a total of 8 points during the regular season. The game will be the last hurdles before a grand final that looms on Nov 14.
Sometime, history repeats itself...
Peewee AAA
The Spartans peewees were unsuccesful at their attempt to pass their playoffs
opening round for a third year running. In 2008 they overcame the Greenfield
Park Packers in the AAA Ballon d’Argent and last year they had the better of
the Joliette Pirates in the Alouettes Cup. Unfortunately, they lost their bid
for three-in-a-row in a 50-32 loss to the St-Leonard Cougars in their opening
round of the 2010 Alouettes Cup.
Mosquito AAA
The Mosquito AAA program will open its postseason campaign at home. As the
Atoms, the Peewees and the Midgets they will face the StLeonard Courgars. The
winner of this 2010 Alouettes Cup playoffs round will advance to the Regional
round where it will represent the MRFL against the Sunnybrooke Bears. This
game will played at St-Laurent Park on Halloween and will be the last home
game for any St-Laurent team in 2010. It is also the fourth year in a row that
the AAA mosquito team plays St-Leonard in the playoffs. In the opening round
of the Alouettes cup in 2008 and 2009, St-Leonard was the better team, but in
2007, however, the spartans ended their campaign by beating the Cougars in the
MRFL consolation cup final.
Atom AAA
For the second year running, the youngest Spartans fell at the first hurdle of their playoffs. They were beaten by rivals St-Leonard. The heavy loss puts an
end to a season that saw St-Laurent beat those same Cougars just a few weeks prior. Despite this week’s result, Coach Eric Girard will be encouraged by the
fact he should keep the core of his group for next season, as the average age of this year’s team is rather low. We are sure they will be up to the task and
will reversing this term’s results.
